Weight Loss Intervention Study for Obese African Americans Ages 12-17
A weight loss intervention study for obese African Americans ages 12 to 17 is being conducted by Dr. Sylvie Naar-King, of the WSU Department of Pediatrics. Participants in the study, which is funded by the American Diabetes Association, will be randomized to one of two weight-loss programs, ShapeDown group or home-based multisystemic therapy. Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy Study
WSU researchers are recruiting volunteers to participate in a Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy study on how the anesthetic Propofol affects the brain. The study, which is led by principal investigator Dr. Michael Marsh, is being conducted by the departments of Anesthesiolgy and Psychiatry & Behavioral Neuroscience. It will be conducted at the Detroit Medical Center in Detroit Receiving Hospital and Harper University Hospital's MR Research Facility.
To be eligible to enroll, participants must be healthy, male, right-handed and between the ages of 20 and 40. This is a paid study ($400 for completion) in which participants will receive a complete medical evaluation free of charge, including a health examination and an MRI/MRS brain scan. Subjects recruited for the study will be monitored for approximately eight hours over two study sessions conducted on two separate days.

Child, Adolescent Psychiatry Studies Using MRI
David Rosenberg, M.D., Miriam L. Hamburger Endowed Chair of Child Psychiatry at Children's Hospital of Michigan and professor and chief of child psychiatry and psychology in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences, is conducting research studies in children and young adults. These studies use Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), picture-like scans of the brain, to learn more about how different treatments effect the brain. Dr. Rosenberg's studies last up to 12-weeks and include an initial free screening. If you are eligible, additional assessments and treatment(s) are provided free of charge. Schizophrenia or Schizoaffective Disorder
Family members between the ages of 10 and 20 who have a relative with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder are needed for a research study at Wayne State University studying risk factors for schizophrenia and other major psychotic disorders. The study, funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, will conduct a thorough clinical and neurobiological assessment of participants. A total of $200 per year is available for completion of all interviews and tests. Family members who participate will each receive $50. Weight Loss and Health Issues Affecting African Americans
Wayne State University 's Center for Urban African American Health is currently looking for volunteers for two research studies concerning weight loss and health issues that may affect African Americans. The program is seeking African-American men or women, aged 45 and older, in general good heath. Breast cancer survivors between the ages of 18 and 70 are also needed.. Volunteers will be compensated. Rheumatoid Arthritis Study
Researchers at Wayne State University are conducting a study of pain and stress management for Rheumatoid Arthritis. The study is funded by the National Institutes of Arthritis, Musculoskeletal, and Skin Diseases. Adults with rheumatoid arthritis are wanted for a study of pain and stress management. The study seeks to test the health benefits of a brief writing exercise followed by an eight-session class. Health evaluations will occur before and several times after the intervention. Study participants can be paid up to $215 for the evaluations, and the intervention is free. Patients taking any type of medication for their RA are welcome. The study is being conducted at both the Detroit main campus and suburban locations. Lung Cancer Prevention Study
The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute is seeking volunteers for a clinical research study on the prevention of lung cancer. Current and former smokers may participate in this study to determine whether a drug formerly used for asthma, Zileuton, can change pre-cancerous tissue in the lungs back to normal or decrease its progression to cancer. Current or former smokers, 35 years of age or older are eligible for the study. Individuals who have had a prior head & neck or lung cancer, regardless of smoking history or age are eligible. Postmenopausal women 35 years and older who are at increased risk for the development of breast cancer are sought to participate in a study being conducted by Dr. Susan Hendrix, WSU professor of obstetrics & gynecology, and the WSU Women's Health Research Department.
