Wayne State University pathologists provide high-quality, efficient
medical diagnostic services while undertaking research initiatives
and teaching tomorrow's physicians.
Wayne State University pathologists, like all of our faculty physicians,
operate within three major spheres of activity: clinical care,
research and education.
Faculty from the department of pathology provide anatomic and clinical pathology
services in Detroit Medical Center hospitals and facilities. About 10 million
clinical laboratory procedures and 50,000 surgical specimens are processed annually.
The laboratory where Wayne State University pathologists work has a test menu
of more than 1,000 tests, representing a full menu of laboratory services "in
house" to meet the needs of an academic medical center. The department possesses
a wide range of subspecialty expertise and provides consultation services statewide
in such areas as renal pathology, tissue typing, hematopathology, perinatal and
gynecological/obstetrical pathology and cytopathology. Together these wide ranging
activities of the department occupy more than 50 full-time faculty.
WSU pathologists' research studies involve both human and experimental
models of disease. The study of human disease, or translational
research, constitutes
the evaluation of diseased human tissue, either from specimens or the department's
frozen tissue resources. Major areas of interest include cancer, cardiovascular
and neural diseases.
