Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation
About Us
As Wayne State University (WSU) Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) we provide high quality and excellent clinical care. Our clinical specialties include PM&R and Neuropsychology. We are also committed to providing excellent teaching programs and have a broad array of externally and internally funded research activities.
During the past 10 years, WSU PM&R and our home base, the Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan, have been awarded close to $20 million in federal and private grants for rehabilitation research focusing on restoring function, improving quality of life and developing innovative therapeutic techniques. This access to research opportunities is unavailable in non-academic settings puts our physicians in a unique position in the community.
PM&R, also known as Physiatry, (pronounced fizz ee at´ tree or fizz eye´ uh tree) is the branch of medicine emphasizing the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disorders – particularly those of the musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, and pulmonary systems – that may produce temporary or permanent impairment. PM&R is one of the 24 medical specialties certified by the American Board of Medical Specialties.
A physiatrist (fizz ee at' trist) is a physician specializing in PM&R. Physiatry provides integrated care in the treatment of all neurologic and musculoskeletal disabilities from traumatic brain injury to lower back pain. The specialty focuses on the restoration of function to people with problems ranging from simple physical mobility issues to those with complex cognitive involvement.
With its emphasis on returning patients to home, family, work and all aspects of community life, it's no wonder the field of Physiatry has often been labeled the "quality of life" specialty, adding both life to years and years to life.
