Wayne State University is recognized as leaders in clinical and
basic research in radiation oncology. The focus of research at
WSU is on improving outcomes, enhancing safety and developing
new treatment modalities.
University Radiation Oncologists hold leadership positions with
preeminent national research groups in radiation oncology, including
the Southwest Oncology Group, the Gynecologic Oncology Group,
the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group and the Pediatric Oncology
Group.
Medical and research leadership in these groups offers WSU Physician
Group patients opportunities for participating in important clinical
trials. These studies of new radiation therapy protocols and technology
give patients access to the latest, potentially more effective
treatments before they are widely available.
WSU maintains an extensive cancer biology program with more than
a dozen scientists on staff. Areas of research interest include
prevention of metastasis, immunotherapy as an adjunct to radiation
and suicide gene therapy.
Basic researchers work closely with the radiation oncologists
to move promising treatments as quickly as possible from the laboratory
into clinical trials.
