Urologic Cancer
Our physicians, who are board-certified urologists, are affiliated with the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, one of the United State's 38 designated National Cancer Institute comprehensive cancer facilities.

Prostate Cancer

WSU urologists treat prostate cancer in a multidisciplinary approach. Patients with clinically localized prostate cancer may receive either a nerve-sparing prostatectomy  or radiation-seed implantation. For patients with more advanced disease, state-of-the-art radiation therapy techniques and chemotherapy are available.

Bladder Cancer
Our department specializes in the construction of continent urinary reservoirs after removal of the bladder for invasive bladder cancer. These orthotopic urinary diversions allow patients to eliminate in a normal fashion without the need for a catheter or a stoma appliance. Also, investigational agents active against superficial bladder cancer is available.

Kidney Cancer

We are actively participating in the development of laparoscopic surgery for renal tumors. In addition, many patients with small renal tumors can be treated with partial nephrectomy, which is the removal of only the tumor, leaving the normal remaining kidney alone.

Testis Cancer
WSU urologists specialize in state-of-the-art testing for testis cancer and the treatment related to metastatic disease. Ultrasonography is available for the detection of small testicular lesions.

Impotency

Impotency is a relatively common occurrence in men as they age. New developments report that andropause (also known as male menopause) is common in men over 50. This could lead to low sex drive and inability to obtain a satisfactory erection. We specialize in all aspects of erectile dysfunction, from diagnostic testing to the use of oral agents or penile prosthesis.

Laparoscopy
Laparoscopy is becoming more common in urology, and we have dedicated personnel and physicians who are experts in such procedures. Laparoscopic radical nephrectomy and prostatectomy are being actively developed in our department. This allows less-invasive procedures to be performed on selected patients. In addition, we are exploring robotic surgery to further facilitate this laparoscopic process.

General Urology

An inevitable fact of life is that as men age, their prostate enlarges and their voiding function worsens. This is because the prostate constricts the urinary stream, causing men to awake frequently at night, not empty their bladder or have a decrease force of stream. Now there's a wide variety of treatment options for men with this condition known as benign prostatic hyperplasia. Active oral medication or minimally invasive surgical procedures can greatly relieve the prostatic blockage and allow men to urinate normally.

Female Incontinence
More than 40 percent of adult women will have some form of urinary incontinence. This is primarily stress urinary incontinence that occurs when a woman coughs or sneezes. Recent advances in the treatment of this disorder allows minimally invasive procedures to be performed with excellent outcomes. We have expert physicians who highly specialize in the treatment of female incontinence with a full array of diagnostic and therapeutic modalities.
